CALIFORNIA SFI
IMPLEMENTATION COMMITTEE
When properly managed, timber is both renewable and a major source of environmental benefits. The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) program is a third-party certification program based on the premise that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. Although strict California regulations already ensure that our forests are sustainably managed, SFI® certification provides consumers with an extra stamp of environmental approval.
The California SFI Implementation Committee is responsible for ensuring that SFI Certified Organizations meet SFI’s rigorous standards. If you have concerns about a Certified Organization’s compliance with the SFI Forest Management Standard or the SFI Fiber Sourcing Standard, please review our Inconsistent Practices page for more information and details on how to report your concerns.

Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI)
The Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI) advances sustainability through forest-focused collaborations. SFI is an independent, non-profit organization that demonstrates our commitment to forests through our work in standards, conservation, education, and community. SFI works with the forest sector, conservation groups, academics, researchers, brand owners, resource professionals, landowners, educators, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, and governments to achieve a vision of a world that values and benefits from sustainably managed forests.
SFI’s forest certification standards provide an important solution to the long-term sustainability of our forests, with requirements to protect water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, rights of Indigenous People, and workers’ rights.
Support Forestry Education
One of the roles of the SFI Implementation Committee is to support local initiatives supporting community outreach and education programs.
Forestry Challenge
Forestry Challenge is an academic event for high school students in technical forestry and current forestry topics that receives support from the California SIC Committee. Since its inception in 2003, the program has grown from one event to six, a complete buildout of the program in California.
Participants spend four days in the forest learning about the ecology and management of the forested landscapes that provide communities with water, recreational opportunities, wood products, and wildlife habitat. Youth benefit by better understanding the relationship of the forested environment to their community, by exposure to natural resource management as a potential career option, and by undertaking a rigorous critical thinking exercise which is timely and addresses current forestry topics such as wildfire, insects, and forest health.
